The need for pro bono assistance continues to outpace the pro bono resources available, but the firm is making strides in the industry’s effort to close that gap. As described more than 38,000 hours of pro bono work last year, opened more than 400 new pro bono engagements and worked on more than 600 existing matters. McGuireWoods lawyers helped restore the freedom of people unjustly convicted of crimes, aided communities rocked by tragedy and helped veterans who bravely served their country. They also helped low-income clients overcome legal problems affecting their basic needs — remedying poor housing conditions, avoiding unlawful evictions, obtaining protective orders against abusers and assisting with child custody issues. These efforts have not gone unnoticed. As described in the report, McGuireWoods received awards, including presented by the Pro Bono Institute to Dominion Energy, VCU Health and McGuireWoods for their innovative pro bono medical-legal partnership. McGuireWoods also accepted the National Veterans Legal Services Program’s outstanding commitment to serving veterans. ONE McGUIREWOODS | SUMMER 20 23 31LAW TO LITER ATURE 32 ONE McGUIREWOODS | SUMMER 20 23GILBERT “BUD” SCHILL Retired McGuireWoods partner Gilbert “Bud” Schill, along with lifelong friends Mac MacIlroy and Rob Hamilton, recently published “ in hardcover, paperback and electronic formats. This latest collaboration is a follow-up to their 2017 release, boys growing up in small-town America in the 1950s and early 1960s. The first book relays their adventures through high school; the sequel, published in fall 2022, focuses on their college and graduate school years as they rush headlong into the chaos of the mid-1960s. Schill, who retired from McGuireWoods in April 2022, recently was selected by Virginia Lawyers Weekly for inclusion in legal profession in the commonwealth. Along with fellow honorees, he was celebrated at a March 28, 2023, reception in Richmond and profiled in a Schill joined McGuire Woods & Battle, now known as McGuireWoods, in 1971, when there were only 50 lawyers at the firm. Over the course of more than 50 years of service, he made partner in 1977, and in 2007 became a member of the Business & Securities Litigation Department. Schill led the litigation practice and the education team and was known as the firm’s resident historian and storyteller. Schill now teaches higher education law at Washington & Lee Law School and is a prolific writer. He is a contributor to Y’all Magazine, an Oxford, Mississippi, publication devoted to Southern culture. ONE McGUIREWOODS | SUMMER 20 23 33Eric S. Fleming, an associate in in Richmond, joined Brinks as senior counsel, litigation. His last day with the firm was March 31, 2023. In his new role, Fleming helps manage Brinks’ commercial and tort litigation throughout the United States and Canada. Fleming joined McGuireWoods in 2017 after serving as a judicial clerk for Judge Mary Malveaux of the Court of Appeals of Virginia. At the firm, he helped manufacturers and retailers untangle the complicated legal and procedural questions that arise in consumer class actions and environmental litigation. He represented clients at all stages of a case, from initial motions practice through trial to post-trial briefing, and he briefed and argued appeals in state and federal courts. Beyond the courtroom, he advised clients on how to avoid litigation. Fleming earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from William & Mary Law School, and he interned for a judge at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and for the solicitor general of Virginia. “It has been the privilege of a lifetime to start my legal career at McGuireWoods. In his new role, he addresses the company’s legal needs across several business groups. His last day at the firm was Feb. 3, 2023. After joining McGuireWoods in 2017, Imaad defended financial institutions, broker-dealers and other corporate clients in commercial, securities and financial services litigation. From 2020 to 2022, Imaad was included on Best Lawyers’ “Ones to Watch” list for commercial litigation. McGuireWoods selected Imaad as a representative member of in their careers. He previously participated in McGuireWoods’ Diverse Associates Leadership Program, designed to equip top- performing associates of color and LGBTQ+ associates with the tools and leadership skills essential to career development and advancement to partnership. “It has been a wonderful five years at McGuireWoods, where I learned everything I know about how to practice law and develop my skills at a litigator,” Imaad says. “I am grateful to the friends and colleagues who encouraged and supported me, especially mentors like Charlotte partners and look forward to this next chapter in my career.” “Mohammad is an exceptional lawyer and teammate who has contributed greatly to our clients’ successes and our firm,” says Charlotte best and look forward to working with him in his new role.” CAREER MO VES ONE McGUIREWOODS | SUMMER 20 23 37Sean McClelland, an associate in the in Washington, D.C., joined the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the District of Nevada. His last day at McGuireWoods was Jan. 20, 2023. On Feb. 13, McClelland joined the Federal Public Defender’s appellate unit, though his role also includes district court work. He is based in the Reno office. The new position marks a homecoming for McClelland, who grew up in northern Nevada, not far from Reno. McClelland started at McGuireWoods as a summer associate in 2016. After law school and a two-year federal clerkship with Judge Rebecca Goodgame Ebinger on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, he worked as a McGuireWoods associate for a year before completing another clerkship with Judge Catharina Haynes on the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. He rejoined the firm as an associate in 2021, focusing on antitrust litigation and other complex commercial litigation matters. McClelland earned his J.D., cum laude, from Duke University School of Law, where he was executive editor of Law and Contemporary Problems and managing editor of the Duke Forum for Law & Social Change. He earned his undergraduate degree, with general and special honors, from the University of Chicago. “I’ve absolutely loved my time at McGuireWoods,” McClelland says. “It has been an honor working with such extraordinary and dedicated attorneys. It will be bittersweet departing, but I have made lifelong friends and colleagues.
