2022 ReportReal Need, Real Progress The 2022 Justice Gap Study, published by the Legal Services Corporation, found that low-income Americans do not get any or enough legal help for 92% of their substantial civil legal problems. McGuireWoods — as individual lawyers and in partnership with like-minded corporate clients — is committed to helping close that gap. McGuireWoods’ history of pro bono service dates back to 1834. For almost two centuries, our dedicated lawyers have been helping vulnerable populations with their legal needs. Throughout that time, the challenges facing our pro bono clients have evolved, but the core values at the heart of our culture have remained constant. In 2022, the firm recorded more than 38,000 hours of pro bono, opened more than 400 new pro bono engagements and worked on more than 600 existing matters. Our lawyers helped to right extreme wrongs, including restoring the freedom of people unjustly convicted of crimes, aiding communities rocked by tragedy and helping veterans who bravely served our country. Our lawyers also assisted low-income clients with legal problems affecting their basic needs, such as remedying poor housing conditions, avoiding unlawful evictions, obtaining protective orders against abusers and assisting with child custody issues. We stood side by side with corporate clients to provide pro bono education and services, including through two of our nationally recognized partnerships: the pro bono medical-legal partnership with Dominion Energy and VCU Health, and the Charlotte Triage program with Bank of America, Duke Energy and Wells Fargo. I want to thank the 80% of McGuireWoods lawyers as well as paralegals and professional staff who contributed their time and talents to our pro bono program in 2022; our corporate clients who partner with us to do good in our communities; and the pro bono clients who trust us with their most important legal issues. This work goes a long way toward closing the justice gap.
