They aimed to select historic figures from diverse backgrounds who had close ties to Washington, D.C., made significant contributions to society and deserved broader recognition. After surveying the office, names were selected for the nine conference rooms and reception area: • Clara Barton: Barton was the founder of the American Red Cross and the first woman to receive a substantial federal clerkship at a salary equal to men. She spent much of her working life in D.C. and served as a hospital nurse in the American Civil War. • Mary McLeod Bethune: Bethune was an African American educator, stateswoman, philanthropist, humanitarian, womanist and civil rights activist who was elected president of the National Association of Colored Women in 1924. She organized the purchase of a property at 1318 Vermont Ave. for the association, making it the first African American-controlled organization to be headquartered in the District. • Adolf Cluss: Cluss was a German-born American immigrant who became one of the most influential and prolific architects in Washington, D.C., in the 19th century. Several of his buildings still stand today, including Calvary Baptist Church and Eastern Market. • Ollie Mae Cooper: Cooper was one of the first African American women to start her own law practice and the first Black woman to be admitted by exam to the D.C. bar. • Benjamin Oliver Davis Sr. and Benjamin Oliver Davis Jr.: The D.C. father and son were the first African American generals in the U.S. Army and Air Force, respectively. Benjamin Davis Jr. also was the first commander of the famed Tuskegee Airmen in WWII, the first African American military aviators in the U.S. Army Air Corps (the precursor to the U.S. Air Force). • Charles Drew: Drew was a prominent African American surgeon and medical researcher who was born in D.C. This was the first known civil rights claim based on sexual orientation pursued in a U.S. court. • Mary Church Terrell: One of the first African American women to earn a college degree, Terrell became known as a national activist for civil rights and suffrage. She taught Latin at the M Street School, the predecessor to Dunbar High School. In 1896, she was the first African American woman in the United States appointed to the school board of a major city.
